Friends & Lovers is a book that evolved over a three year period, following an unforseeable thread through the lives of several of my models. It started with Jeremy, a pint-sized, precocious young man who I met along with his equally pint-sized boyfriend at a street fair in 1999. I wanted to photograph the two of them together. We scheduled a shoot for Saturday and they broke up on Friday. That could have been the end of the story, but fortunately it was only the beginning. Jeremy became a good friend, and he soon met a new pint-sized young man named Chris with whom he began an intense relationship that I was fortunate enough to capture with my camera. After a tumultous year, they each moved on to new relationships. Chris approached me about photographing him with his new boyfriend, Ben, and I obliged. Ben brought his friend Brad to me, and Brad brought his boyfriend Steve. And so unfolded the intimate and very real story documented in the book.
